What is COMAC?
COMAC is a
Shanghai-based state-controlled firm. It was launched in May 2008 with an
initial investment of 19 billion yuan (US$2.78 billion) with the shareholders
including the Chinese central government, the municipal government of Shanghai and the Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC).
COMAC will design and build commercial aircraft i.e. ARJ-21 and C919 to compete
with Boeing and Airbus and is already paving the way for international
cooperation and representation on these projects. It plans to set up overseas
subsidiaries in Europe, the United States,
Hong Kong and Russia
to market the regional jets internationally.
